The L Word : Behind the Scenes

The L Word Bette Porter Tina Kennard

#3 Touch Tones: The Ringer

”Dear Lord, this is too good.” I had heard her say as my bedroom fell back into darkness.

Jenny Best White backgrd

Jenny’s Press Conference –  Bette – 2:45

From a distance I see Jenny gleeful at being surrounded by reporters. ”What’s her mousy assistant’s name again?” I ask Tina.

”Adele. She seems helpful so far. I’ll say this about her. She never sleeps. I get emails and bits of info from her at all hours.”

”I would be such a basket case if I had to make my living working for some freak like Jenny.” I sip my brandy some more and a tension I didn’t know I had releases behind my eyes.

”Some people like the opera, Bette, like you do, and some prefer a carnival freak show.”

”Any objections to my putting the window down?” I look at Claire.

”No, but we’re recording it all for you to be able to play back later. Consider the DVD my wedding present to you both.”

”We will, absolutely.” I thread my fingers through Tina’s hand. ”Oooops! I think something just happened over in Loony Land.”I begin to laugh and lean back so Tina can see past me outside.

She leans forward and shakes her head as we see Adele’s jaw clench, drop and then, snap shut again. Jenny lets out a terrific blast of ”Fuck You’s” at Josh as the red lights of the cameras roll and capture the vicious film clip that Josh created as our final, critical blow.

”It’s time.” Claire presses send on her iPhone. I mmediately all the reporters’ surrounding Jenny phones begin buzz, ring and tweet. Alice reads Claire’s text and then taps Max on the arm. I can read her lips asking, ”Where are they?”

Suddenly, the thirty foot tall doors to the film’s sound stage begin to slowly crawl open. Claire orders our limo driver to take us in.

”Wait! Aren’t we getting behind that podium up there and doing our bit?” I ask as the press conference stage sails past my window and slowly a hysterical Jenny fighting angrily with Adele, slides into view. I shrink out of sight and press the window closed sealing us back into the privacy of our limousine as we draw near Jenny and Adele.

    • Terribly kind of you to say. I do like dreaming up adventures and illustrating them with great images. I know show writers – they are great, great writers – and it’s a great job if you can write under pressure and then throw all that away because the director says it sucks and start again with maybe 18 minutes left to give it to the actors. I could probably do it with some training. Ain’t nobody calling me though but you guys – AND I appreciate all the comments and tweets and reTweets so much.

Maybe I’ll dream up a great series and someone will say: “Blackbird, where have you been?”

  13. Another excellent installment!! Poor Jenny….NOT!!! And I do agree with MamaDoc, you SHOULD remake the L-Word!!
